When Cindy Mushet and her daughter Bella came to town to talk about Cindy’s new book, Baking Kids Love, I couldn’t resist asking them to come by my house and do some baking with my own kid. My 7-year-old does like cooking with me, but, with a professional in the kitchen, I wondered if we could take on a more challenging project than usual. And we did. I wrote about it here on Al Dente Blog, along with the recipe for the meringue cookies the kids whipped up and piped into Halloween-style “rattling bones and fingers”. The cookies can be made into any shape you like, though — alphabet letters seem like a natural favorite. Here’s a little video showing some of the highlights of our after-school cooking lesson. It struck me that it’s always easier to learn new techniques with experienced helpers — even when one of them is only in middle school.
This looks like a lot of fun! Any idea where I can get a pastry bag? I’ve been looking around for one, specifically to make cream puffs. I tried it with a frosting bag, only to make a big mess.
Thanks for the tips!
Katie
I love them, but mine always come out chewy. Were yours crunchy?
EatDrink, the Home Cake Decorating Supply Co. at 9514 Roosevelt Way has always had everything — really, everything — I’ve ever looked for when it comes to cakes or candies.
Luigia, mine were a little chewy, but I don’t think any more than most. But then, I am a huge fan of the super-chewy almond ones at the Bread Peddler in Olympia, so that is my benchmark.
This is awesome. I am a fairly laissez-faire baker, and unfortunately that doesn’t give me much of a leg up on the meringue-making process. I loved getting some easy, non-fussy pointers here.
And I echo the Home Cake Decorating Supply co. — they really do have everything! And more often than not, the owner knows what you are looking for before you even ask. Really, it’s eerie.
