Allons-y, bakers! Get set for the first “Francophile Fruit Tart Contest,” set for July 8 at Rover’s as a “pre-event” for that weekend’s Bastille Day Festival at Seattle Center. It’s sponsored by the local branch of the French-American Chamber of Commerce.

Contestents need to register in advance (write the chamber’s Laetitia Faure at  trade@faccpnw.org), and prepare two identical 10″ fruit tarts, using local, seasonal, and sustainable products. Bring the tarts to Rover’s for the event at 4 p.m. July 8, along with documentation of where the ingredients are from. (If you picked berries from your own bushes, for instance, your word will suffice; otherwise save your receipts.) I’ll be one of the judges, along with Rover’s chef-owner Thierry Rautureau and pastry chef Matt Kelley, Lorna Yee of The Cookbook Chronicles, Betty Frost, a member of the Chamber, and others. Contestants will be judged on flavor, texture, craftsmanship, originality, and presentation. It’s modeled on a similar contest in Portland, the “Concours de Tartes aux fruits,” and promises to bestow serious bragging rights in the pastry department.
