Ethan Stowell’s band of merry competitors, having worked their way through chili, hot wings, and other challenges, are participating in a “Battle of the Lasagna” at Union on April 19. Thirteen professional and amateur cooks will compete that night for the title of “Lasagna Champion of Seattle” (because I don’t know anyone else in town who’s going to challenge them on that), plus a chance to raise money for a good cause.
Where do you come in? For $50, all benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, you get all the lasagna you can eat, plus salad, garlic bread, and beer — and a scorecard to vote for Best in Show.
The night’s chefs are Dan Braun of Oliver’s Twist, Top Chef contestent Sabrina Tinsley of Osteria La Spiga, Jim Romdall and Elliot Newman of Vessel, and “Mamma” Enza Sorrentino of Sorrentino Trattoria & Pizzeria. Brave souls , the others, to compete against an Italian woman known as “Mamma.” The “food enthusiasts,” some of whom also cross the line into professionals, are Rocky Yeh, Darryn O’Shea, Wendy Miller, Lauren Edlund, Wendy “Della” Petersen, Mark Miller, Darren Vengroff, and Angela Stowell (wife of the other Stowell, and wine director of the restaurants).
In the hot wing competition, Union’s most recent contest, Braun took first place, followed by Yeh. I happened to see Yeh tonight at a Words and Wine event (more on that another day), and he said he was fine as #2. Braun, he told me, confited his hot wings.
These events always come with a hearty dose of humor, and they often sell out. Reservations: Call Union at 206-838-8000.
Ooh, it’ll be tough to beat the lasagna at Sorrentino. May the best dish win!
I volunteer at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They do such fantastic work and have a real passion for finding a cure. I’m happy to see these folks planning a fun night to raise money for the cause!
